Quiet sounds.

This afternoon my mother and Jack headed back to Arizona.

It was a lovely visit and we packed a lot of fun into this week. There were lobster rolls and frappes, skee ball and the pool. We junked, we shoe shopped and we wiied.

Now though the house is quiet.

I took the girls to Global Thrift today where they picked out a huge stack of books for about $4.

As I sit in my red kitchen chair Lily is eating her dinner of mac and cheese and reading. I love the sound of the spoon hitting the bowl and the soft turn of the pages of her book.

Rebecca is upstairs with her dinner, because I am a mother who knows when her kids need some quiet and solitude. She is reading her book, will probably be reading it for hours.

I love the quiet. The sound of pages being turned signals contentment in the house for all of its residents.

I hope that you can find quiet in your life too.

Oh how cool! My mom was ok about me needing my time but would push at times and it wasn't a good thing. I don't look back now and say I'm glad she did that. OH WELL! Good for you!

Thank you, Sara. If you read The Book Whisperer, you'll feel all content with yourself - your kids get it. It's bliss to escape into a book (and eat mac 'n cheese!)

I am already invisioning myself Saturday night with a big bowl of homemade mac'n cheese (well....maybe a frozen Stouffers one cuz it takes like homemade!) and a book in my favorite comfy spot....perfect! I think you may have started something here.....Have your kids started school yet? We started here Monday. Though that drives me crazy, I wish we started after Labor Day. I think it is to darn hot to start school! Hope your mom enjoyed her time away!

I like the way you appreciate the little parts of life. Like the sound of a spoon hitting the bowl of mac and cheese. I love a house filled with family or friends, but I also love quiet time. Mine is first thing in the morning...coffee mug, granola bar and my book. I am re-reading "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith and just don't want it to end. I have so many books to read, and kind of feel guilty for some stupid reason to be re-reading a book. What am I afraid of? That the book police will swarm my deck and take it out of my hands? I love this book!
